 South Africa says US misrepresented its policies after visa curbs South Africa's foreign ministry said on Wednesday that it ‌had noted with concern U.S. visa restrictions on some people from South Africa announced by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio a day earlier. The foreign ministry added in a statement that ⁠the U.S. announcement aligned with "the mischaracterisation of South Africa's domestic policies by fringe groups". "We maintain that challenges in our bilateral relations with the USA can only be resolved by constructive engagement through state actors on both sides of the diplomatic channel not unilateral acts," the statement said, Reuters reported. Trump has repeatedly criticized ‌South ⁠Africa since the start of his second term for what he falsely claims is the racial persecution of its white minority, citing affirmative action laws aimed at ⁠addressing the inequality that has persisted since apartheid.  Obama backs Virginia Democrats’ redistricting plan ahead of voter decision

Former President Barack Obama is backing a Democratic initiative in Virginia to redraw congressional districts, a move that has become a focal point in the broader national debate over redistricting ahead of this year’s midterm elections. The announcement came Thursday, a day after the state Supreme Court cleared the way for the redistricting question to appear on the April 21 ballot, with early voting starting Friday.

In a video message to Virginians, Obama urged support for the referendum, framing it as a way to protect voters’ influence from actions taken by Republicans in other states. He emphasized that the measure is temporary, noting that after the 2030 census, Virginia will return to a bipartisan redistricting process. The Democratic-backed map, released in February, aims to give the party four additional seats, but it will only take effect if approved by voters and upheld by the courts. Legal challenges continue, leaving the outcome uncertain, with Democrats presenting it as a counter to Republican efforts to maintain a congressional majority, while Republicans argue it favors liberal northern Virginia.
