 Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali.  ANAMBRA SECURITY: POLICE-LED JOINT SECURITY TEAM STORMS A BUSH IN AWUDA, NNOBI, RESCUES AN ABDUCTED VICTIM, ARRESTS THREE NOTORIOUS KIDNAPPERS, RECOVER ARM AND RANSOM. 


In the evening of 18th April 2026, Police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad Awkuzu in collaboration with members of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, Nnobi, acting on a well-coordinated operation based on credible intelligence, stormed a bush located at Umuezeala Awuda Village, Nnobi, in Idemili south  Local Government Area. The team successfully arrested three armed suspects, rescued a kidnapped victim and recovered one locally made Beretta pistol and the ransom of Four Hundred and Sixty-Nine Thousand Naira (₦469,000) from the suspects.


The three suspects arrested at the scene, all males include: Chidalu Obi 25 years, Chichebem Ojenigbo 26 years and Chikannechukwu Eze, 20 years respectively.


Preliminary investigation reveals that the suspects lured the victim, an electrician by profession, under the pretext of offering him a job. Upon arrival at the agreed location, the victim was forcefully blindfolded at gunpoint and taken to the bush at Umuezeala Awuda, where he was held captive.


Meanwhile, the suspects confessed to the crime and admitted to collecting a ransom of Four Hundred and Sixty-Nine Thousand Naira (₦469,000), which was transferred into a SportyBet account belonging to one of the suspects, Chidalu Obi.


The Anambra State Police Command reiterates its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and urges members of the public to continue to support the Police with timely and credible information.
