Ann-Margret, 84, reveals ongoing pain of losing husband of 50 years: 'I miss the laughter'

Ann-Margret, now 84, has spoken lovingly about her late husband Roger Smith, nearly nine years after his passing.

Despite her six-decade career in Hollywood with iconic roles in Bye Bye Birdie, Viva Las Vegas, and Carnal Knowledge, she considers her greatest achievement to be her 50-year marriage.

As she approaches her 85th birthday, she says Smith “meant everything” to her, describing their time together as joyful and full of laughter. She admits that what she misses most is his humor and the way he cared for her.

The couple’s romance began years after first meeting in 1961, when Smith invited Ann-Margret to one of his performances.

Their relationship quickly deepened, and she said she knew by their third date that she would marry him. Smith proposed in 1966 during a carriage ride in Central Park, presenting her with a five-carat diamond ring.

They wed in a simple Las Vegas civil ceremony in 1967, with Smith later stepping back from acting to manage Ann-Margret’s career. Together, they built a partnership that she proudly calls her life’s greatest accomplishment.

Smith passed away in 2017 at age 84 from complications of myasthenia gravis, leaving Ann-Margret to cherish their decades together.

She recalls the many moments of laughter they shared and the comfort of knowing she could depend on him.

Even now, she surrounds herself with memories of their life, reflecting on the love and companionship that defined their marriage.

For Ann-Margret, the bond they shared remains her proudest legacy.
