Artemis II sets record for farthest journey from Earth

The Artemis II astronauts have officially traveled farther from Earth than any humans in history.

At around 1:57 p.m. ET, the crew surpassed the Apollo 13 record of 248,655 miles, set in April 1970 during the crew’s emergency return to Earth. From Mission Control, capsule communicator Jenni Gibbons marked the milestone, recalling the achievements of Apollo 13 astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise over 55 years ago and noting that Artemis II was now pushing beyond that historic frontier.

Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen reflected on the achievement, saying the milestone honors the pioneers of human space exploration and challenges current and future generations to keep pushing boundaries. The Artemis II mission is expected to reach its maximum distance of roughly 252,760 miles from Earth around 7:07 p.m. ET.
