Cuba’s president rejects calls to step down amid escalating tensions with Trump administration Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said he will not step down from office, rejecting suggestions that he should resign during an interview conducted in Havana in his first appearance with a U.S. broadcast network. When asked whether he would consider leaving office to help stabilize the country, Díaz-Canel pushed back sharply, saying Cuba’s leadership is not chosen by the United States and insisting the nation operates as a sovereign state. He added that stepping down “is not part of our vocabulary,” and defended Cuba’s political system as one based on domestic elections at the local level. The exchange comes amid heightened tensions between Havana and Washington, with the Trump administration increasing pressure on Cuba and openly calling for political change on the island. U.S. officials have described Cuba as facing deep economic challenges and have argued that reforms to its leadership and...

EBONYI GOVERNOR WARNS APC ASPIRANTS: ONLY THOSE WITH VISIBLE ACHIEVEMENTS WILL GET PARTY TICKET FOR 2027.(PHOTO).

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has warned that only aspirants with undeniable and visible achievements in their current or previous positions will be supported by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to contest the 2027 general elections in the state.

Governor Nwifuru made the declaration on Wednesday while joining the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate and Senator representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District, Chief Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi, to commission several constituency projects.

Represented by the Ebonyi State Chairman of the APC, Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, the governor stated that the era of recycling non-performing leaders is over, warning that the party will not repeat the mistakes of 2023.

“The time for stock-taking has come, and only those with results and visible achievements will be considered again to fly our party’s tickets for the next general elections,” he said.

“Those who have nothing to show for their years of representation will have themselves to blame as the party will not like to repeat its mistakes in 2027,” Governor Nwifuru declared.

The governor’s strong position is seen as a clear signal to both serving lawmakers and other aspirants that performance and tangible deliverables will be the major criteria for APC ticket allocation ahead of the 2027 polls.

In his remarks at one of the project sites, Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi said he was motivated to embark on the projects to complement the developmental efforts of Governor Nwifuru in Ebonyi North Senatorial District.

He promised to set a high standard in representative governance that would be difficult, if not impossible, to beat if given the opportunity for re-election in 2027.

“Your Excellency, our Governor and our leader, I was motivated to embark on these projects outside my core legislative duties of lawmaking and oversight functions, to complement your efforts in our senatorial district,” Nwebonyi said.

Some of the projects commissioned and inspected include roads, classroom blocks, street lights, and other infrastructure aimed at improving the lives of residents in the senatorial district.
