A Florida man convicted in the 1990 killing of his neighbor after she discovered him burglarizing her home was executed Tuesday evening at Florida State Prison near Starke. Chadwick Scott Willacy, 58, was pronounced dead at 6:15 p.m. following a three-drug lethal injection, marking the state’s fifth execution of the year. Before the procedure began, he delivered brief final remarks, apologizing to his family and friends, urging fellow inmates on death row to stay strong, and maintaining his innocence while expressing sympathy to the victim’s family.
Authorities said the case stemmed from a Sept. 1990 incident in Palm Bay, when the victim returned from work and found Willacy inside her home. Investigators said she was attacked during the burglary, restrained, and later killed, with evidence indicating she died from smoke inhalation after being set on fire. He was later convicted of first-degree murder, burglary, robbery, and arson and sentenced to death after two separate jury recommendations following earlier sentencing proceedings. His final appeals were rejected, and he was executed after spending decades on death row.
