 Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali. NINE PEOPLE ARRESTED AS CULT CLASH ROCKS BENUE BURIAL CEREMONY 


PAt least nine suspected cult members have been arrested after a violent clash disrupted a burial ceremony in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State. The incident reportedly led to the destruction of homes and valuables, with several individuals still unaccounted for.


Tension gripped parts of Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State after a violent clash involving suspected cult groups left properties destroyed and several persons missing.


The incident occurred in Abenga, Mbakya, and Mbabur communities during the burial of one Dugeri Terhemen, popularly known as “Black Deal.” According to local sources, the burial ceremony was disrupted by clashes between rival groups, leading to chaos in the affected areas.


Eyewitness accounts indicate that at least two houses were set ablaze during the violence, with goods and personal belongings worth millions of naira reportedly destroyed in the process.


Security operatives were said to have intervened, resulting in the arrest of nine suspected cult members. However, several other individuals involved in the incident are still reportedly at large, raising concerns among residents.


Local sources described the situation as tense, with many residents fleeing their homes for safety amid fears of further violence.


As of press time, authorities are yet to release an official statement, but sources say security presence has been reinforced to prevent further breakdown of law and order.


The latest incident adds to growing concerns over cult-related violence in parts of Benue State, particularly during social gatherings and community events.
