Two stabbed in London’s Golders Green amid surge in antisemitic attacks, police detain suspect

 Two people were stabbed in London’s Golders Green neighborhood on Wednesday in what community security officials described as a targeted attack in an area with a large Jewish population. A local Jewish security patrol group said its members detained a male suspect shortly after the incident, which it said appeared to involve an attack on Jewish members of the public.

Police were called to the scene after reports of a man armed with a knife running along a main road and attempting to stab pedestrians. The group said two victims were wounded and were treated at the scene by a volunteer emergency medical service before being taken for further care. Officers reportedly used a taser during the arrest before taking the suspect into custody.

The attack drew swift condemnation from senior political leaders. The British prime minister described it as an antisemitic assault and said attacks on Jewish communities are attacks on the country as a whole. London’s mayor also condemned the violence, calling it “appalling” and announcing increased police patrols in the area.

The incident comes amid heightened concern in Golders Green, a north London suburb home to synagogues, Jewish schools, and businesses, where roughly half of the local population identifies as Jewish. Residents have recently faced a series of troubling incidents, including an arson attack on emergency service vehicles last month and another suspected arson incident earlier this week involving a memorial wall near a Jewish center.

Authorities have previously linked recent investigations in the area to potential hate-motivated offenses, though not all cases have been formally classified as terrorism. Police have increased visible security measures, including armed patrols, in response to community concerns.

The stabbing also comes against a backdrop of rising antisemitic incidents across the United Kingdom since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in late 2023. Monitoring groups report a sharp increase in cases in recent years, including attacks on places of worship and community institutions, heightening fears among Jewish communities nationwide.
