Enugu Nurse Arrested, Grilled by Police Over Viral Video Exposing Poor Hospital Conditions

A nurse at Uwani General Hospital in Enugu State, Joy Ezeugwu, is undergoing police questioning after her arrest on Monday in connection with a viral video that highlighted deplorable working conditions at the public health facility.

Ezeugwu was detained by officers from the Police Force Headquarters Annex, Federal Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Enugu. Her arrest stems from a petition filed by Ifeyinwa Peace Okwudu, the administrator of her former school.

Education technologist Alex Onyia first broke the news of the arrest on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday. In a follow-up post, Onyia said Ezeugwu was at the police facility writing a statement in response to the allegations in Okwudu’s petition.

Onyia claimed Okwudu is demanding N10 million in damages from Ezeugwu for alleged emotional and psychological harm. He described Okwudu’s actions as an attempt to “destroy” the nurse and criticised what he called oppressive practices against staff and students in institutions.

The controversy erupted after Ezeugwu shared a video in April showing the poor state of Uwani General Hospital. The footage, which went viral on social media, depicted deteriorating infrastructure, including a lack of electricity and running water, with health workers expressing concerns about its impact on patient care. Ezeugwu was subsequently suspended from her duties.

In a letter issued through her counsel, Ikechukwu Davidmark Ene, Okwudu alleged that the video was secretly recorded without consent during a private staff meeting held in her office. According to the petition, participants were instructed to leave their mobile phones outside the meeting room. Okwudu claimed Ezeugwu denied having any recording device but allegedly concealed one in her bag to capture the proceedings.

As of Monday evening, Ezeugwu remained at the FCID Annex responding to the petition. Police have not yet issued an official statement on the matter.

  1. Why should the good people of Enugu State allow this nurse to suffer for telling them the truth . Does it mean nobody cares for truth.
