Former California Mayor Admits Working as Undisclosed China Agent

Former Arcadia mayor Eileen Wang has admitted in federal court that she secretly acted on behalf of the People's Republic of China while serving in the United States.

Wang, 58, entered a guilty plea on May 29, just weeks after federal prosecutors charged her with acting as an unregistered foreign agent. She resigned from her position the same day the charge was announced.

According to prosecutors, Wang worked alongside Yaoning “Mike” Sun between late 2020 and 2022 to promote content supporting the Chinese government. Authorities said the activities were carried out without the required disclosure to U.S. officials.

Wang is expected to return to court for sentencing on October 6. The charge carries a potential prison sentence of up to 10 years.

Following her resignation, Wang issued a statement expressing regret for her actions and apologizing for what she described as mistakes in her personal life.

Court documents state that Wang and Sun operated a website known as U.S. News Center, which presented itself as a news platform serving the Chinese-American community.

Prosecutors said the site published material favorable to the Chinese government and that some of the content was shared under the direction of officials from Beijing.

Authorities also alleged that Wang and Sun communicated with Chinese officials through encrypted messages on WeChat, discussing articles that were prepared in advance.

In one instance highlighted by prosecutors, Wang reportedly informed a Chinese official that a published article had attracted more than 15,000 views. After receiving positive feedback from the official, she allegedly responded with the message, “Thank you leader.”

Sun had previously pleaded guilty to a similar foreign agent charge in 2025. He is currently serving a four-year federal prison sentence.
