Nicole Richie enjoyed a special family moment this week as she stepped onto the red carpet with daughter Kate Madden for a rare public appearance together.
The pair attended the Los Angeles premiere of Nicole’s new film, Stop! That! Train!, marking their first major red carpet outing side by side in more than two years.
Nicole, 44, arrived in a navy-and-white polka dot outfit paired with a matching head scarf and a white fur-trimmed coat, while 18-year-old Kate chose a strapless leather mini dress with knee-high boots.
The evening clearly meant a lot to Nicole, who later shared photos from the event online alongside the caption: “STOP THAT TRAIN Premiere turned girls night out.”
The appearance also drew attention because it marked Kate’s first public outing since Nicole revealed that her daughter prefers using her middle name instead of her first name, Harlow.
Fans first noticed the change earlier this year when Nicole wished her daughter a happy 18th birthday online and referred to her as Kate.
Later speaking about it publicly, Nicole explained that her daughter has the freedom to decide how she wants to present herself.
“She has her whole life,” Nicole said at the time.
Joel Madden later shared that the name change was not recent at all. According to the musician, Kate actually started using the name during childhood while in school.
“She’s been going by her middle name since first grade,” he explained during a podcast interview.
Joel even recalled the funny moment he and Nicole first realized it had happened.
“The teacher was like, ‘Kate’s doing great, she’s so nice,’” he remembered. “We were like, ‘Who’s Kate?’”
The teacher then informed them that their daughter had introduced herself that way at school.
Nicole and Joel, who married in 2010, also share a son, Sparrow, who is now 16. Despite growing up with famous parents, both children have mostly remained away from the spotlight, making the latest mother-daughter outing even more special for fans.
