RUSSIAN DRONE CRASHES INTO ROMANIAN APARTMENT BUILDING AFTER UKRAINE ATTACK, INJURING CIVILIANS AND RAISING NATO BORDER ALARM. (PHOTO).

Russian drone crashes into Romanian apartment building after Ukraine attack, injuring civilians and raising NATO border alarm

A Russian drone involved in an overnight attack on Ukraine veered off course and crashed into an apartment building in eastern Romania, injuring two people and triggering fresh concerns about spillover from the war into NATO territory.

Romanian officials said the drone was detected on radar entering national airspace before striking the roof of a residential building in the city of Galati, where it sparked a fire. Emergency crews reported that two people suffered minor injuries, while several others were evacuated from the area.

The Romanian military deployed two F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter in response, with authorization to engage the airborne object. Warning alerts were sent to residents, but the drone was not intercepted before impact.

Authorities described the incident as a serious breach of international law and requested accelerated NATO support for enhanced anti-drone defenses. The strike adds to a growing number of airspace violations involving debris or stray drones linked to the conflict, heightening tensions along NATO’s eastern border.

Military officials emphasized that while the drone originated from Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the strike on Romanian territory was not considered a direct targeted attack on Romania itself. Still, they warned that Russia represents an ongoing security threat to countries in the region.

Ukraine’s air force said it shot down more than 200 drones overnight as part of a broader Russian assault that also included ballistic missile strikes across multiple regions.

Romania has reported repeated airspace violations since the war began, but officials said this incident marked one of the most serious so far due to injuries and damage in a populated area.

In response, Romanian leaders convened the country’s top defense council and ordered diplomatic action, including declaring the Russian consul in Constanta persona non grata and moving to close the consulate there. Russia maintains an embassy in Bucharest.

Lawmakers in Romania had already authorized military action against drones entering its airspace, though officials have often been cautious about engaging them due to risks over populated areas.

The incident reflects a broader pattern of aerial spillover from the war, with stray or intercepted drones occasionally crossing into neighboring countries such as Estonia and Latvia, as well as NATO members in Eastern Europe, raising concerns about the resilience of regional air defenses.

NATO officials expressed solidarity with Romania and reaffirmed the alliance’s commitment to defending member states’ airspace. European leaders also condemned the incident, saying it underscored escalating risks along Europe’s eastern frontier and prompting renewed discussions on sanctions and security measures.
