American boy, 12, injured in shark attack during Bahamas family tour

A 12-year-old boy is in stable condition after being bitten by a shark on Tuesday while swimming in the Bahamas.

The incident occurred during a family tour of the Exuma Cays, where the boy had been swimming alongside his brother. Following the encounter, the victim was transported by boat to New Providence for medical treatment. Authorities have not released the boy's identity or specific details regarding the severity of his injuries.

The Bahama Islands rank as the ninth-highest location globally for unprovoked shark attacks. Experts note that sharks are more likely to strike if they feel cornered or trapped, which can lead to severe lacerations as the animal attempts to escape.

The Exuma Islands, including destinations like Staniel Cay, are popular for boating, snorkeling, and swimming due to their clear waters and vibrant marine life. Dozens of shark species inhabit the Caribbean Sea, with tiger, hammerhead, smooth dogfish, and Caribbean reef sharks frequently navigating nearshore waters, particularly during the summer months. Local authorities did not specify the species of shark involved in the attack.
