The Abia State House of Assembly has strongly condemned the rape and murder of 21-year-old nursing student, Wendy Achumba, in Obowo, Imo State.
Miss Achumba, a student of Our Lady of Mercy Nursing School, was raped and murdered in her off-campus residence at Umuadara, Umulogho, in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State on May 22, 2026. The victim was a native of Obingwa Local Government Area in Abia State.
In a motion of urgent public importance moved on Tuesday, Hon. Ucheonye Stephen demanded immediate justice for the slain student.
The lawmaker commended the efforts of security agencies and community stakeholders that led to the arrest of suspects linked to the gruesome crime. He called for the expeditious conclusion of all investigations into the matter.
Hon. Ucheonye further urged the Inspector-General of Police, the Imo State Police Command, and other relevant security agencies to ensure a transparent, thorough, and diligent investigation and prosecution of all persons found culpable.
He also advised the Imo State Government and relevant authorities to strengthen security surveillance around educational institutions, students’ hostels, and off-campus accommodations to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
Reacting to the motion, Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, described the loss of young lives as a tragic experience no one would wish for.
He noted that the case is currently under investigation and assured that the House will engage Governor Alex Otti on the matter.
The brutal killing of Wendy Achumba has sparked outrage, with calls for enhanced security for students across the region.
