 IMF says Senegal visit was constructive, will talk more about programme request


The International Monetary Fund said on ​Monday that its staff had "open and constructive technical discussions" ‌on a visit to Senegal and it would hold more talks over the West African country's request for a support programme.


Senegal ​and the Fund have been in talks ​to resolve a hidden debt issue since the ⁠country's then-new leaders revealed the problem in 2024.


It said IMF staff would continue discussions over policies and reforms that could be supported by a new lending programme, including measures to address debt vulnerabilities, ​strengthen debt management ​and enhance ⁠public governance.


The Fund froze its previous $1.8 billion ​lending ⁠programme after the larger debt pile came to light, and Senegal has been largely shut out of international ⁠capital ​markets, leaving it reliant on ​regional borrowing.
