 TEAM LAGOS EMERGES TOP AT 23RD NATIONAL SPORTS FESTIVAL SOUTH WEST ELIMINATION Lagos State athletes proved their dominance in the South West by edging out regional competitors and emerging top in the five team events contested at the elimination series qualifier for the 23rd National Sports Festival later this year in Enugu. The elimination series featured team events in volleyball, basketball, football, beach volleyball, and cricket in male and female categories. While the team clinched only the female football ticket by topping their group, they showed dominance in three other sports by winning both the male and female tickets. Team Lagos took first position in the volleyball male and female categories. The male team defeated their counterparts from Ondo in the finals by 25-18, 24-26, 25-20, and 25-20, while the female team defeated Team Oyo by 25-18, 22-25, 28-26, 16-25, and 15-8.  Abducted General dies in captivity


Major General Abubakar Rabe (rtd), who was abducted in Katsina State exactly two weeks ago, is dead.


Confirming his passing in a statement issued on Saturday, June 13, the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Muazu, said the retired senior military officer d!ed from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension during his captivity.


The government expressed deep sorrow over the development, noting that extensive efforts were made by the state government and security agencies to secure the ex-Army General’s release to no avail.


“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” the statement said


According to the government, the late General’s abduction and subsequent death represented a significant loss not only to his immediate family and Katsina State but also to Nigeria as a whole.


Governor Dikko Umaru Radda extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and the nation, describing the incident as a dark moment that underscored the need for stronger collaboration in tackling insecurity.


The retired major general was travelling to Katsina on Saturday, May 30, alongside his wife, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, and their driver, Abdullahi Sa’idu, when their vehicle was ambushed along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli road in Matazu Local Government Area.
