Mel B says dancing improved her mental health after abusive marriage: 'Key to being healthy'

Melanie “Mel B” Brown has found that dance, particularly Zumba, plays a vital role in maintaining her mental health. At SXSW London on June 2, the 51‑year‑old former Spice Girl led a Zumba class and joined a panel to share her wellness journey.

Reflecting on her past, she explained that leaving her abusive marriage forced her to rebuild her life, and movement became a powerful tool for healing. She emphasized that trauma lingers in the body, and dance offered her a way to release it.

Brown described Zumba as liberating compared to her formal dance training, noting that it allows her to express her personality while staying fit.

She highlighted the importance of keeping the body active, saying that movement is essential for health and happiness.

For her, dancing is not just exercise but a joyful outlet that helps her avoid stagnation and maintain a positive mindset.

During the event, Brown encouraged others to find physical activities that resonate personally, stressing that any form of movement can boost happiness.

She explained that choosing music and letting go while dancing creates a mental “high” that lifts her spirits.

Looking back, she expressed gratitude for rediscovering joy and freedom through dance, underscoring how far she has come in her mental health journey.
