The Anambra State Government has intensified work on the Onitsha Main Market Regeneration Project, with contractors actively executing key components as part of Governor Chukwuma Soludo's vision for a clean, green, planned and sustainable commercial hub.

During a joint inspection of the project site on June 28, the Commissioner for Commerce, Mr. Nonso Chukwuma Ebonwu, said the visit was to assess the pace of work, strengthen inter-ministerial coordination and ensure quality delivery in line with the Solution Agenda.

He disclosed that contractors have begun removing asbestos roofing at Gwongworo I and excavating drainage at the park area, while directing that construction debris be cleared daily to minimise disruption to trading activities.

Ebonwu also said arrangements were underway to provide lighting for night time construction, while survey and engineering teams finalise site layouts, structural designs and locations for public conveniences, clinic buildings and other facilities.

He added that stakeholders are being engaged ahead of planned improvements along Bright Street and adjoining areas, where limited demolition may be required to create pedestrian walkways and improve accessibility. He assured affected traders that due process would be followed and adequate notice given.

"The regeneration of Onitsha Main Market goes beyond infrastructure. It is about creating a safer, more organised and globally competitive trading environment that will support businesses, attract investment and serve future generations,"  the Commissioner said.

Chairman of Onitsha Main Market, Hon. Chijioke Okpalaugo, commended Governor Soludo for fulfilling his promise to regenerate the market, expressing satisfaction with the pace of work and assuring government of the traders' full cooperation.

Ebonwu urged traders, market leaders and residents to continue supporting the project, expressing confidence it would strengthen Onitsha Main Market's position as one of Africa's leading commercial centres while boosting economic growth and improving the ease of doing business.
