Morocco places provinces on highest alert as wildfire spreads Morocco has placed nine provinces at the highest wildfire alert level as blazes continued to intensify over the past week, with satellite data showing that more than 4,100 hectares (10,131 acres) have burned since the start of the year. Data from the European Commission-backed Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS) showed that about 855 hectares (2,112 acres) burned over the past week, marking an increase from the previous week, Anadolu Agency reported. The system also detected 1,006 thermal anomalies across Morocco between Jan. 1 and Aug. 2, including 59 over the past week. Thermal anomalies are satellite-detected hotspots and do not necessarily represent separate wildfires, as the same fire may be detected more than once. On Friday, Morocco’s National Agency for Water and Forests issued red-level wildfire warnings for nine provinces in the country’s north and east, indicating an extreme risk of forest fires. Lebowakgomo husband sentenced to life imprisonment for orchestrating wife’s murder

The Polokwane High Court has sentenced 59-year-old Molabe Fannie Seribishane to life imprisonment for the premeditated murder of his wife, Mamsy Seribishane.

Mamsy Seribishane, a nurse at Lebowakgomo Hospital, was shot and killed on 22 October 2024 while arriving for duty near the hospital gate.

Investigations later linked her husband to the murder. Police revealed that the couple was in the process of divorce and that a protection order had previously been granted against the accused.

The accused was arrested in November 2024 after going into hiding. Police recovered a 9mm pistol in his possession, which ballistic analysis later confirmed was used in the murder.

The court heard that the accused planned and executed the killing despite denying involvement throughout the trial.

He was sentenced as follows:

• Life imprisonment for murder

• 6 years for contravention of the Domestic Violence Act

• 15 years for possession of an unlicensed firearm

• 6 years for possession of ammunition

The additional sentences will run concurrently with the life sentence.

The court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

Police have welcomed the sentence, saying it sends a strong message against gender-based violence and domestic-related murders.
