 U.S and Iran offer conflicting accounts of planned Qatar talks as tensions over nuclear deal and Strait of Hormuz escalate 

The United States and Iran are presenting conflicting accounts of whether high-level talks will take place in Qatar this week, deepening uncertainty around negotiations intended to focus on Iran’s nuclear program but increasingly dominated by tensions over the Strait of Hormuz.

The planned discussions were originally set to be held in Switzerland and centered on nuclear issues, but officials said the venue and agenda shifted after a recent exchange of strikes between the two countries involving the strategic waterway. It remains unclear whether U.S. and Iranian officials will meet directly in Doha or rely on Qatari mediators to relay messages.

President Trump said Monday that a meeting would occur in Qatar’s capital at Iran’s request, writing on social media that the talks were scheduled for Tuesday. The White House later said the U.S. delegation would include Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and indicated that both technical and senior-level discussions were expected.

Iranian officials, however, disputed that characterization. A spokesperson for Iran’s foreign ministry said an Iranian delegation would travel to Doha only to discuss implementation of an interim arrangement with no connection to the U.S. delegation. The official added that no negotiations with the United States were scheduled.

The disagreement highlights growing strain in a process that had recently shown tentative progress following earlier talks in Switzerland, where both sides discussed broader nuclear-related issues and measures to keep the Strait of Hormuz open. U.S. officials had described those meetings as laying the groundwork for a potential long-term agreement.

Under the interim understanding, Iran is expected to facilitate safe commercial passage through the waterway for a limited period. However, the agreement has been overshadowed by repeated threats to close the strait and a recent attack on a vessel passing through it, which triggered several days of military exchanges and disrupted shipping.

Washington has sought to stabilize conditions in the waterway, which is a critical route for global energy supplies, while Iranian officials continue to signal leverage over the region’s maritime traffic. Intelligence assessments cited by officials suggest Tehran may continue to use the threat of disruption as negotiations proceed.

The broader framework envisions a comprehensive agreement within a 60-day window, though that timeline is already partially elapsed and remains subject to extension if both sides agree. U.S. officials have indicated they do not intend for negotiations to drag on indefinitely.

The latest dispute over whether talks are even scheduled underscores how fragile the process remains as both sides continue to trade signals over diplomacy and pressure.
