Anambra Govt Prohibits Unauthorized Speed Bumps, Orders Removal of Existing Ones

‎By Mokwugwo Ogochukwu

‎The Anambra State Government has prohibited the construction of unauthorized speed bumps on public roads across the state, describing the practice as illegal and warning that offenders will face sanctions in accordance with extant laws.

‎The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Arc. Okey Ezeobi, announced the directive on July 21 during an inspection of ongoing road and infrastructure projects across the state.

‎According to the commissioner, the indiscriminate construction of speed bumps by individuals, communities and organizations has contributed to the deterioration of road infrastructure, thereby undermining the government's investment in road construction and maintenance.

‎He disclosed that the state government has commenced plans to remove all unauthorized speed bumps on public roads, stressing that only traffic-calming measures approved by the relevant authorities will be permitted.

‎Arc. Ezeobi cautioned residents against erecting speed breakers or speed bumps without official approval, emphasizing that such actions violate state regulations and will attract appropriate penalties. He stated that the ban forms part of the government's broader strategy to preserve road infrastructure, improve traffic flow and ensure uniform engineering standards across the state's road network.

‎The policy has, however, elicited mixed reactions from residents and road users. While many welcomed the move as a necessary step toward protecting public infrastructure and enhancing driving conditions, others expressed concern that removing speed bumps from accident-prone areas could increase the risk of road crashes.

‎Some residents maintained that speed bumps have been effective in slowing traffic around schools, markets, residential communities and other high-risk locations, urging the government to introduce alternative traffic-calming measures where necessary.

‎Others argued that many of the existing speed bumps were poorly designed and constructed without adherence to engineering standards, resulting in damage to vehicles, longer travel times and accelerated deterioration of road surfaces.

‎The development reflects the Anambra State Government's continued efforts to regulate road infrastructure, improve transportation and promote safer, more efficient road use while safeguarding public assets across the state.
