Bride with terminal cancer marries partner of 33 years from her hospice bed surrounded by their children and grandchildren

Karen Glossop, 58, married her longtime partner Stephen, 67, from her hospice bed in Chesterfield, England, after 33 years together. With the support of Ashgate Hospice staff, the couple exchanged vows on July 2 surrounded by their children, grandchildren, and loved ones.

Karen, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer earlier this year, wore a white dress with a lace jacket and shared a joyful kiss with Stephen, sprinkling flower petals on his hand before raising a glass of bubbly.

Stephen described the day as “beautiful” and “so special,” explaining that marriage had always been part of their plan but was delayed as life unfolded and children arrived.

He expressed gratitude to the hospice team for organizing the ceremony so quickly, noting that 22 guests were able to attend on short notice. “It will be something I’ll always remember,” he said, adding that Karen loved seeing everyone together for the milestone moment.

Local businesses also contributed to the celebration, donating flowers, photography, a wedding cake, and food to make the day possible.

Hospice staff reflected on the community’s generosity, with senior nurse Kayleigh Peacock calling it “incredibly special” to see so many people come together.

For the Glossops, the impromptu wedding was a poignant reminder of enduring love, shared resilience, and the importance of family even in life’s most difficult seasons.
