The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has commissioned newly constructed modern Single Officers’ Quarters at Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment, Giri, Abuja, reaffirming the unwavering commitment of the Nigerian Army to personnel welfare as a strategic pillar for sustaining combat readiness and operational effectiveness.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony on Tuesday, 21 July 2026, Lieutenant General Shaibu stated that the project underscores his administration’s Soldier First Culture, which places the welfare, morale and well-being of personnel at the heart of the Nigerian Army’s transformation agenda. He noted that providing quality accommodation remains a deliberate investment in building a highly motivated, resilient and mission-focused force capable of effectively addressing the nation’s evolving security challenges.
The COAS emphasised that modern accommodation is more than a welfare initiative, describing it as a critical force multiplier that enhances physical well-being, mental alertness and professional efficiency. He explained that officers who live in a conducive environment are better equipped to maintain a high operational tempo, make sound decisions under pressure and deliver mission success across various theatres of operation.
Lieutenant General Shaibu reaffirmed that the Nigerian Army would continue to prioritise the construction of modern accommodation and other welfare infrastructure across barracks and cantonments nationwide as part of broader efforts to strengthen institutional resilience and improve operational capability. He commended the Directorate of Procurement for delivering the project in accordance with approved standards and expressed profound appreciation to the Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for its consistent support towards enhancing the Nigerian Army’s operational capacity through sustained investment in personnel and infrastructure.
Earlier, the Director of Procurement, Major General Sadisu Yakasai, disclosed that the project comprises five two-storey blocks of Single Officers’ Quarters, each containing six self-contained one-bedroom flats, providing accommodation for a total of 30 single officers. He explained that each apartment is equipped with a bedroom, living room, kitchen and restroom facilities, adding that the project reflects the Chief of Army Staff’s enduring commitment to improving the welfare and living standards of personnel. According to him, enhanced accommodation directly boosts morale, strengthens combat readiness, and contributes significantly to the Nigerian Army’s ability to effectively discharge its constitutional responsibilities.
