 U.N chief Guterres calls for countries fueling Sudan's war to be held accountable United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Wednesday for countries providing weapons to the warring parties in Sudan that are used to attack civilians to be held accountable. "What is happening in Sudan is absolutely horrible. The humanitarian situation in Sudan is devastating. The level of suffering of the Sudanese people is intolerable," Guterres told reporters ahead of the annual gathering of world leaders at the United Nations in New York next week. Sudan's war, which erupted in April 2023 following a power struggle between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, has displaced more than 14 million people and created one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Deputy arrested for relationship with 14-year-old boy. 


In Homer, New York (Cayuga County area), a 25-year-old Cayuga County Sheriff’s deputy named Hunter R. Lawrence of Auburn was arrested by New York State Police for an explicit relationship with a child.


Investigators allege Lawrence met the boy online, communicated with him on Snapchat, and engaged in sexual activity with him 10 to 15 times between February and May while the victim was 14 and 15 years old. The alleged encounters took place in Lawrence’s pickup truck on a dead-end road near the boy’s home and at least once at Lawrence’s residence.


Lawrence allegedly invited the underage boy on a trip to Nashville, said he planned to go to bars there, and asked the boy if he had a fake ID. The boy reportedly found it odd coming from a cop and did not go.


Lawrence allegedly told investigators he believed the boy was 18. The boy had told him he was 18 when they first connected. Under New York law, that is not a defense.
