 Kaduna Building Airport-Style Bus Terminals To Transform Public Transport

The Kaduna State Government says it is constructing world-class, airport-style bus terminals as part of a major overhaul of the state’s public transportation system, with the flagship Eastern Terminal expected to generate about 15,000 direct and indirect jobs upon completion.

The Acting General Manager of Kaduna Line and Acting Director-General of the Kaduna State Transport Regulatory Authority (KADSTRA), Engr. Inuwa Ibrahim, disclosed this during an inspection of the Eastern Terminal project in Millennium City, Kaduna.

According to Ibrahim, the facility is being built on a 20-hectare site by CGC Nigeria Ltd. and is designed to meet airport-standard specifications aimed at improving passenger comfort, efficiency and safety.

He described the project as the largest ultra-modern transport terminal in terms of size and infrastructure in the sub-Saharan West African region.

The terminal will include ticketing halls, passenger waiting lounges, multiple boarding terminals, a hotel, restaurants, compressed natural gas (CNG) filling stations and other modern transport facilities.

“The terminal is being built with airport-standard specifications to provide comfort, efficiency and safety for passengers,” Ibrahim said.

He commended CGC Nigeria Ltd. for maintaining high construction standards despite challenges posed by the rainy season, noting that the project had made significant progress since construction began about four months ago.

Ibrahim said the government expected the terminal to be completed within the next three months for inauguration by Governor Uba Sani.

The Project Manager of CGC Nigeria Ltd., Mr. Ji Zhongyin, said major structural works had already been completed, while current activities include block work, drainage construction, road works and other external infrastructure.

He added that the remaining stages would involve finishing works, decoration and the installation of lifts, escalators and safety equipment.

“The official completion date is the end of November, but we are confident of delivering earlier without compromising quality,” Zhongyin said.

Speaking during a media tour of ongoing transport projects, Ibrahim said the Uba Sani administration was pursuing strategic infrastructure development to improve security, urban planning, passenger convenience and economic growth.

He explained that the government first moved to harmonise illegal motor parks after identifying 51 unauthorised parks along a 24-kilometre corridor between Kawo and Command Junction.

According to him, the proliferation of illegal parks posed serious security risks and undermined effective transport regulation.

He said the government subsequently reopened Mando Motor Park and commenced the construction of new centralised transport terminals across the state.

Ibrahim disclosed that the Kakuri Southern Terminal, inaugurated in December 2025, had reached about 90 per cent completion and would accommodate all transport unions and operators within a single facility.

The complex, he said, includes terminals, shops, hotels, a fire safety centre, a filling station and a vehicle maintenance centre.

He added that the Soba Motor Park project had attained about 85 per cent completion and would facilitate the relocation of the existing Kawo Motor Park in a bid to reduce insecurity and decongest the Kaduna metropolis.

According to Ibrahim, security reports had linked criminal activities around the old Kawo Motor Park to several incidents, including the killing of a military officer.

He said the relocation plan had received the support of transport unions and other stakeholders.

On the Eastern Terminal, Ibrahim noted that the project aligns with the Federal Government’s Eastern Bypass initiative, which is intended to divert heavy traffic away from Kaduna city centre.

He said the terminal is expected to handle about 5,000 vehicles daily upon completion.

Ibrahim further stated that the three major transport terminal projects would collectively create more than 20,000 employment opportunities.

He added that the state government was also developing the Kaduna Bus Rapid Transit (KBRT) system and the Kaduna Light Rail project, while exploring the possibility of water transportation on River Kaduna as part of a comprehensive multimodal transport network.

According to him, the administration’s goal is to position Kaduna as a modern transport hub operating in line with international standards.
