Kanu’s Legal Team Threatens Lawsuit Against TV Guest, News Central Over Alleged Call for Extrajudicial Killing


The legal team of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has threatened legal action against guest Chigozie Nnabugwu and News Central Television for what it described as a call for the extrajudicial killing of the detained IPOB leader.


In a strongly worded press statement issued on Tuesday and signed by Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, the lawyers condemned remarks allegedly made by Nnabugwu during a programme on News Central TV. According to the statement, Nnabugwu reportedly urged the Federal Government to kill Kanu “for normalcy to return to the Southeast.”


The video of the programme was published on the verified X handle of News Central Television on July 19 and subsequently went viral.


The legal team described the comments as “reckless, irresponsible and unlawful,” arguing that they constituted a threat to Kanu’s life and had the potential to incite violence and disrupt public order.


The lawyers further claimed that the remarks could amount to offences under Section 24(1) of the Cybercrimes Act, which criminalises the intentional transmission of electronic messages that threaten life or are capable of causing a breakdown of law and order. They also pointed to possible liabilities under the Criminal Code for incitement to violence.


News Central TV was accused of providing a platform for inflammatory content. The statement warned that the broadcaster could face regulatory sanctions for allegedly breaching broadcasting codes on incitement and public order. The lawyers added that airing such comments while Kanu’s trial is ongoing could amount to contempt of court.


The legal team said it is reviewing all available options, including filing formal complaints with relevant authorities. It demanded an immediate public retraction from Nnabugwu and an unqualified televised apology from News Central Television.
