 PROTEST OVER POWER OUTAGES BRINGS TRAFFIC TO A STANDSTILL IN SOWETO

Motorists have been urged to avoid several major routes in Soweto following a service delivery protest by residents of Pimville and Dlamini on Sunday morning.

The protest, which began over ongoing electricity and power supply outages affecting the communities, has resulted in multiple road closures after protesters barricaded roads with debris.

The affected routes include Klipspruit Valley Road at the Modjaji Street Circle, Klipspruit Valley Road at Chris Hani Road, Klipspruit Valley Road at Moroka Nancefield Road, as well as the intersection of Chris Hani Road and Elias Motsoaledi Road in Lakeview.

Traffic authorities have warned motorists to expect significant congestion and delays in and around the affected areas.

Diversions have been implemented, with motorists advised to make use of alternative routes including Koma Road, Elias Motsoaledi Road, Moroka Nancefield Road and Modjaji Street where possible.

JMPD officers remain on the scene to monitor the protest, manage traffic flow and maintain public safety.

JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said residents had taken to the streets to voice their frustrations over prolonged electricity outages.

"The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department is urging motorists to avoid the affected routes in Pimville and Dlamini as service delivery protests continue. Road closures remain in place due to barricades, and traffic delays are expected. Officers are on the scene managing traffic and ensuring public safety while monitoring developments," said Fihla.-#JoziFmNews
