Trump Declares Iran Deal 'Over,' Slams Regime as 'Scum' Amid Soaring Tensions and Oil Prices

In a blunt declaration that reverberated across global markets, United States President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the interim ceasefire agreement with Iran was definitively "over," expressing a complete disinterest in further engagement with Tehran. Ahead of a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Trump unleashed a torrent of criticism, labeling the Iranian leadership as "scum" and "sick people," and dismissing any future negotiations as a "waste of time."

The Abrupt End of a Fragile Truce

The now defunct interim ceasefire, brokered with the mediation of Pakistan, had aimed to establish a 60-day window for Washington and Tehran to negotiate a permanent resolution to their ongoing conflict. However, indirect talks held in Qatar concluded last week without any discernible progress, setting the stage for Trump's definitive pronouncement. His comments, delivered alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, underscore a complete breakdown in diplomatic efforts.

Escalating Military Actions and Revoked Licenses

The diplomatic collapse follows a period of heightened military activity. The U.S. had recently launched new military strikes against Iran and revoked a crucial license that permitted Iran to sell its oil. These actions came in the wake of three tankers being struck by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that over 60 small vessels belonging to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp (IRGC) were targeted in an effort to impose significant costs on Iran for alleged ceasefire violations.

The IRGC quickly retaliated, claiming strikes on U.S. military installations in Bahrain and Kuwait. Iran's top joint military command, Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, condemned the American strikes as a "blatant act of aggression," vowing a "crushing response" and warning against any U.S. interference in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Adding to the pressure, the U.S. Treasury, which had issued a general license on June 22 allowing the sale of Iranian crude oil and petroleum products until August 21 under the interim agreement, revoked it on Tuesday. Iran now has until July 17 to wind down any existing transactions, further isolating its economy.

Global Markets Reel as Oil Prices Surge

The geopolitical tremors instantly translated into significant market volatility. World oil prices surged by more than five percent following Trump's comments. International benchmark Brent North Sea crude leaped 5.3 percent to US$78.09 a barrel, while the main U.S. contract, West Texas Intermediate, climbed 5.4 percent to US$74.23 a barrel.

Bjarne Schieldrop, chief commodities analyst at SEB, noted that these developments have effectively plunged the future of the 60-day negotiation process into deep uncertainty. Schieldrop further suggested that current market fundamentals support a price closer to US$80 a barrel, rather than the US$70 mark, indicating sustained upward pressure on oil prices amidst the renewed instability. Despite leaving open the possibility for U.S. representatives to continue talks, Trump himself expressed extreme skepticism, reiterating his belief that they would be "wasting their time."
