Trump to present World Cup trophy as he touts tournament’s impact on US soccer culture

President Donald Trump is preparing to present the World Cup trophy to the winner of Sunday’s final between Argentina and Spain, while celebrating what he views as a major boost for soccer’s popularity in the United States.

Speaking at a FIFA reception in New York City, Trump said the tournament had shown that the U.S. had become a soccer nation and predicted the sport’s popularity would continue to grow. He described the event as a moment that brought people from around the world together.

The final marks the end of more than a year of preparations and challenges for the United States, Canada and Mexico as co-hosts of what is expected to be the largest World Cup ever. The tournament faced criticism over immigration policies, ticket prices and concerns from human rights groups.

The Trump administration faced international scrutiny over visa restrictions that prevented some fans and officials from entering the country. Tensions increased after the U.S. launched military action against Iran, creating complications involving the Iranian national team, whose fans and some staff members were unable to enter the United States and instead were based in Mexico.

Despite early concerns, the tournament’s focus shifted toward the experiences of fans visiting the U.S. Many supporters shared positive moments from their trips, highlighting American culture, food and traditions. Concerns about possible immigration enforcement actions near games also did not materialize.

The administration also drew controversy after Trump contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding a disputed referee decision during a U.S. match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The decision resulted in a red card for American forward Folarin Balogun, which initially would have prevented him from playing in a following match. FIFA later overturned the call.

Officials defended the administration’s involvement, saying it had a responsibility to raise concerns about officiating and tournament integrity after providing significant federal support for security and preparations.

The successful operation of the World Cup is viewed as an important test ahead of future international sporting events in the U.S., including the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and the 2034 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The country is also expected to host the 2031 Women’s World Cup.

The tournament also highlighted tensions between the U.S. and its co-hosts. Relations with Canada and Mexico have been strained by trade disputes, tariffs and other political disagreements, though both Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney plan to attend the final.

Trump has not publicly revealed whether he supports Argentina or Spain in the championship match. His relationship with Argentina’s President Javier Milei has been friendly, while Spain has clashed with Trump’s administration over issues including defense spending and foreign policy.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is expected to attend the final, while Milei has chosen to stay home, citing superstition.
