‎The Honourable Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Edward Ibuzo, has reaffirmed the Anambra State Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives through the promotion of water safety and increased awareness on drowning prevention, as the world marks World Drowning Prevention Day.

‎In a statement to Newsmen on July 25, 2026, in commemoration of the global observance, Hon. Ibuzo described drowning as a preventable tragedy. He stressed that increased awareness, public education, and strict adherence to water safety measures remain critical to reducing such incidents.

‎The Commissioner called on residents of Anambra State, particularly communities living around rivers and other inland waterways, to adopt responsible safety practices during all water-related activities. He emphasized the need for parents and guardians to closely supervise children near water bodies at all times.

‎Hon. Ibuzo further urged boat operators, ferry service providers, fishermen, and other water transport users to prioritize safety. He advised them to ensure the availability and proper use of life jackets, avoid overloading of boats, and comply with all approved water transport regulations.

‎He noted that promoting a culture of water safety aligns with the Soludo administration’s vision of protecting lives and improving public safety across all modes of transportation, including inland water transport, through sustained public enlightenment and stakeholder collaboration.

‎The Commissioner encouraged individuals and organizations to support initiatives that promote swimming education, emergency preparedness, and community awareness, noting that simple preventive actions can significantly reduce the risk of drowning.

‎Hon. Ibuzo also advised members of the public to avoid swimming in unfamiliar or dangerous waters, especially during adverse weather conditions. He urged everyone to report unsafe practices that could endanger lives on the state’s waterways.

‎Reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to public safety, the Commissioner stated that the Anambra State Ministry of Transport will continue to work with relevant stakeholders to strengthen water transport safety standards and promote policies that enhance the protection of lives and property.

‎He called on all Ndi Anambra to join hands in preventing drowning through vigilance, responsible behavior, and adherence to established safety measures, emphasizing that every life counts and every preventable death is one too many.
