 ‎‎NAF RECEIVES FIVE NEW HELICOPTERS AS FG ACCELERATES AIRPOWER MODERNISATION ‎ The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken delivery of five new helicopters as the Federal Government accelerates efforts to modernize Nigeria’s airpower capabilities and strengthen the Armed Forces’ capacity to respond effectively to contemporary security challenges.  ‎ ‎A statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame indicates that the platforms comprise three AW-109 Trekker B helicopters  and two H-125 helicopters. ‎ The three AW-109s, which form part of 10 recently acquired by the Federal Government, were received in Lagos on 15 September 2026, with the remaining seven expected to be delivered before the end of 2026. ‎ ‎The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, described the acquisition as another significant milestone in the Federal Government’s sustained investment in the modernization and re-equipment of the NAF noting that the new pl...

 ANSIEC Ready for Saturday’s Anambra Local Government Elections- -Chinedu

Anambra State  Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC)  has declared its readiness to conduct Saturday’s local government elections across the State, with accreditation and voting scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.


This was disclosed in a press briefing in Awka on Wednesday,  ANSIEC  Commissioner for Information and Publicity, Chief Tony Chinedu, said preparations for the August 29 election began in February, following the publication of the election notice in September 2025.


The poll will be held across the state’s 21 local government areas, 326 wards, and approximately 5,200 polling units.


 

Chinedu disclosed that the commission had procured over 90 per cent of the required electoral materials and completed the training of ad hoc personnel. 


He added that both sensitive and non-sensitive materials had been packaged for deployment, with the evacuation of non-sensitive materials to designated locations already underway. Sensitive materials, he said, would be deployed early on election day.


Final training for Collation Officers and Supervisory Presiding Officers is currently ongoing in Awka. Chinedu noted that the training was critical given peculiarities of the election, including the new “Yes” or “No” voting procedure for unopposed chairmanship candidates.


 

According to ANSIEC, 22 candidates are contesting for chairmanship positions while 346 candidates are vying for councillorship seats. 


Only two political parties, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the Young Progressive Party (YPP)  are participating. Both parties concluded their primaries in March, after which ANSIEC screened candidates and published their names to allow for withdrawals and substitutions in line with electoral law.


Accreditation and voting will take place simultaneously from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.


Chinedu urged eligible voters to come out peacefully to exercise their franchise and called on candidates, political parties, and supporters to shun violence before, during, and after the election.


He said security agencies had been fully deployed to safeguard voters, election officials, and electoral materials.


The commissioner reiterated ANSIEC’s commitment to conducting a free, fair, credible, and peaceful local government election and called on residents to participate actively
