Courtney Stodden celebrates ‘historic’ milestone to end child marriage in Calif. years after Doug Hutchison wedding at age 16

Courtney Stodden is celebrating a major milestone in California’s push to end child marriage. On August 19, she shared a heartfelt Instagram video announcing that AB 1267 the bill that would prohibit child marriage had passed the state Senate unanimously.

Stodden described the vote as “historic,” noting that every senator supported the measure. The bill now heads back to the Assembly for clearance before reaching Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk.

In her message, Stodden reflected on her own experience of marrying actor Doug Hutchison at 16, while he was 51, emphasizing that a marriage license does not magically grant a child adult freedoms or resources.

She explained that California remains one of only three states without a minimum marriage age, making the legislation crucial for establishing a “legal floor” of protection.

Stodden has been working closely with lawmakers and the nonprofit Unchained at Last, a survivor‑led organization dedicated to ending forced and child marriage in the U.S.

Stodden urged Californians to continue supporting the bill as it moves to the Assembly Judiciary Committee, encouraging followers to email their representatives using the link she provided.

While she celebrated the Senate’s unanimous vote as a victory, she stressed that the fight is ongoing, declaring, “Children should not be married. They should be protected.” For her, the progress of AB 1267 represents both personal vindication and a broader step toward safeguarding vulnerable minors.
