LASISMA COMMENCES PUBLIC CAMPAIGN AGAINST ILLEGAL OCCUPATION OF SETBACKS IN OJO
The Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development (MPP&UD), Office of Physical Planning, through the Lagos State Informal Space Management Authority (LASISMA), has commenced a public sensitisation and enforcement campaign against the illegal occupation and encroachment of road setbacks and statutory corridors reserved for public buildings and critical government infrastructure across Lagos State.
The exercise, which commenced on Monday, August 24, 2026, was carried out around the perimeter of the newly constructed Ojo General Hospital, along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway by the LASU-Iba Road Junction.
The exercise involved sensitising illegal occupants of the affected areas and serving contravention notices with a seven-day compliance period on persons and structures found to be illegally occupying the designated spaces.
Speaking with journalists after the exercise, the General Manager of LASISMA, TPL Daisi Oso, explained that the initiative was necessary to reclaim setbacks around government institutions and restore such spaces to their intended purposes.
He expressed concern over activities around the hospital, including illegal dumping of refuse, an unauthorised fruit market, public toilets, a planks market, and shanties by illegal occupants, noting that such uses and structures are incompatible with the edifice's status.
According to TPL Oso, the encroachment will adversely affect physical orderliness, public health, and security around the hospital.
He emphasised the importance of ensuring free access to the hospital, especially for emergency cases requiring urgent medical attention.
The General Manager stated that the State Government had directed the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Office of Physical Planning through LASISMA, to reclaim such spaces and restore them to their designated uses.
While urging traders and illegal occupants to leave the place, TPL Oso emphasised that road setbacks and spaces reserved for public institutions must be protected from conversion to illegal uses.
He reaffirmed the Authority's resolve to protect public setbacks across Lagos State, stating that the Government would no longer tolerate indiscriminate encroachment on such spaces.
According to him, today's exercise focused primarily on sensitisation and serving contravention notices, giving affected occupants seven days to vacate the encroached areas, after which further enforcement action would commence.
He added that the entire perimeter of the Ojo General Hospital had been affected by encroachment and that contravention notices are being served on all identified illegal occupants within the affected areas.
Tpl Daisi Oso further disclosed that the Government had plans for the eventual redevelopment and proper management of the spaces surrounding the hospital, with complementary uses that would enhance the functionality and environment of the newly constructed facility.
The enforcement exercise was supported by a team of Town Planners from the Technical Service Department, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development (MPP&UD), Office of Physical Planning and LASISMA staff, while representatives of various media organisations were present to provide wider coverage of the Government's efforts to promote orderly, safe and sustainable use of public spaces.
The exercise forms part of LASISMA's statutory mandate to regulate, coordinate and manage Informal Urban and Incidental Open Spaces across Lagos State, while promoting compliance with physical planning regulations and safeguarding the use of public infrastructure corridors.
