Yemen fighting pushes nearly 3,000 to Djibouti in less than a week: UN    Nearly 3,000 people have fled Yemen for Djibouti in less than a week as escalating violence drives growing displacement within the country and across its borders, the UN refugee agency said Friday. “Refugees continue to arrive by boat through Obock, Khor Angar, Moulhoule and Godoria after difficult journeys in small vessels,” UNHCR representative in Djibouti Sandrine Desamours told reporters in Geneva, Anadolu Agency reported. More than half of those crossing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait are women and children, while some families have been displaced for a second time after previously fleeing Yemen during the 2015 crisis and later returning. UNHCR is preparing for at least 10,000 new arrivals but warned that capacity is rapidly diminishing. Markazi refugee village, designed for 5,000 people, was already hosting more than 2,700 Yemenis and 1,500 Eritreans. More than 100,000 people have also been displaced ins...

MACBAN Condemns Alleged Killing Of Herders, Destruction Of Settlements In Kaduna’s Kauru LGA

The Kaduna State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has condemned the alleged killing of two herders, the destruction of livestock, and the burning of nomadic settlements in Chawai Chiefdom, Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

In a statement signed by the association’s State Chairman, Alhaji Abdulhamid Musa, made available to KADUNA POLITICAL AFFAIRS on Monday, MACBAN described the incidents as “tragic, unacceptable, and a serious threat to peace, justice, and the rule of law.”

According to the association, suspected criminals attacked two herders who were peacefully grazing their livestock in Tayaga Village, Mayango District, Badurum Sama, on Sunday, August 2. MACBAN said the attack resulted in the death of Anas Idris, while another herder, Idris Yunusa, sustained injuries.

The association also raised concerns over an earlier incident on July 30 in Kidundun Village, Chawai Chiefdom, alleging that military personnel set several nomadic settlements ablaze during an operation.

MACBAN identified the affected families as those of Yusuf Hashimu, Yusha’u Abdullah, Muhammad Dahiru, Sani Usman, Abbas Lawal, Yahuza Hussaini, Yau Muntari, and Joli Muntari. It claimed the operation destroyed homes, food supplies, and other personal belongings, leaving many families displaced.

The association called for a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the operation, arguing that the actions were carried out without what it described as adequate investigation or due process.

MACBAN further expressed concern that attacks on peaceful herders often receive limited public attention and media coverage, stating that many pastoral communities lack the educational, political, and institutional representation needed to ensure their grievances are heard.

The group also maintained that many of its members have over the years fallen victim to attacks by criminals, bandits, kidnappers, and terrorists, leading to the loss of lives and livestock.

The association urged the public to avoid stereotyping peaceful pastoralists, stressing that criminal acts should be attributed to individuals rather than entire ethnic or occupational groups.

As part of its recommendations, MACBAN appealed to the Kaduna State Government to grant legal recognition to long-established pastoral settlements through the issuance of Certificates of Occupancy (C of O), saying the move would help reduce land-related disputes, improve security, and protect law-abiding pastoral communities from unlawful displacement.

It also called on the state government to establish an independent investigative committee to probe the recent incidents, identify those responsible, and recommend measures to prevent future violence.

The association further urged security agencies to conduct their operations in accordance with the law, respect the rights of all citizens, and ensure accountability where abuses are established.

MACBAN reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful coexistence between herders and farming communities and appealed to government authorities, traditional rulers, security agencies, civil society organisations, and the media to work together in promoting justice, fairness, and lasting peace across Kaduna State.
