 Flights suspended to Ethiopian holy town of Lalibela as fighting expands Flights to the historic Ethiopian town of Lalibela ​were suspended on Thursday due to fighting nearby, seven sources said, as residents in the Tigray region to the north stocked up on food and ‌cash, fearing that renewed fighting could trigger another major war. Tigrayan forces seized three local airports and launched attacks in Afar and Amhara regions with allies there this week, in the most serious escalation since a devastating 2020-22 war against Ethiopian government troops. In its first public comments on the fighting, Ethiopia's army said on Thursday that it had foiled the attacks and killed, wounded or captured more than 500 enemy fighters. The United Nations ​and the European Union called for restraint and a return to the African Union-brokered peace process that had ended a conflict that killed hundreds of thousands of people.  NEW PRESIDENT PLEDGES TO RESTORE ONITSHA SPORTS CLUB’S GLORY

The newly elected President of Onitsha Sports Club, Chief Titus Adirika, has pledged to restore the club’s glory, rehabilitate its facilities and revive sporting activities while promoting unity among members.


Adirika made the pledge on Aug. 5, hafter his election and handover ceremony, urging members to support the new administration in its efforts to reposition the club and restore its pride of place.


He said members had taken a bold step toward better management, expressing confidence in the new executive, which he described as a team of professionals and reliable members.


“Our club deserves better management and members have effected it today. I am proud of the team that will work with me. We have professionals and reliable gentlemen, and we believe that the club will be lifted again to regain its glory,” he said.


Adirika said the administration would promote discipline, integrity, respect, honour and sportsmanship, adding that the rehabilitation of facilities damaged during the crisis would be given priority.


“Everybody should brace up for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of things that were damaged during the crisis,” he said, adding that he would serve as president for 2026, with the possibility of re-election after a year.


A trustee of the club and Chief Executive Officer of Best Aluminum Group, Chief Pius Nweke, commended members for the peaceful conduct of the election and urged the new executive to carry everyone along.


Nweke described the election as transparent, free and fair, and appealed to all parties to accept the outcome and support the new administration in addressing the club’s challenges.


The new executive members are Adirika, president; Chief Okwudili Muoedu, vice president; Chief Toochukwu Chidobelu, general secretary; Chief Martin Iloegbunam, treasurer; Chief Solomon Maduike, financial secretary; Ms Chidimma Muokwue, social secretary; Chief Nche Nwabudu, house and grounds secretary; and Chief Chuka Egbosiuba, grill secretary. 


Social Secretary Ms Muokwue said the executive would work with the president to resolve outstanding issues and improve the club for members.
