NEXT ATLANTIC TROPICAL STORM WILL BE NAMED DOLLY, COINCIDENTALLY FOLLOWING DOLLY PARTON’S DEATH. (PHOTO).

Next Atlantic tropical storm will be named Dolly, coincidentally following Dolly Parton’s death

The next named tropical storm to form in the Atlantic this hurricane season is expected to be called Dolly, a coincidence that comes just days after the death of country music icon Dolly Parton.

The name has no connection to Parton’s death. Atlantic tropical systems are named according to a predetermined list maintained under international weather guidelines. The names are arranged alphabetically, alternate between male and female names, and are reused on a six-year cycle unless a name is retired because of a particularly deadly or destructive storm.

The Atlantic season began with Tropical Storm Arthur making landfall along the U.S. Gulf Coast in June, followed by Tropical Storm Bertha, which brought heavy rain to parts of Louisiana and Texas in July. Tropical Storm Cristobal formed in the Atlantic earlier this month but quickly weakened and dissipated.

Forecasters were monitoring another system off the coast of Africa that could become the next named storm. An area of thunderstorms south of the Cabo Verde Islands had some favorable conditions for development and could strengthen into a tropical depression within the next week.

If the system reaches tropical-storm strength, defined by maximum sustained winds of at least 39 mph, it will be named Tropical Storm Dolly.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted a below-average Atlantic hurricane season, partly because of El Niño. The agency expects between eight and 14 named storms, including three to six hurricanes and one to three major hurricanes.

Storm names are used to make warnings easier to communicate and reduce confusion when multiple systems are being monitored. The World Meteorological Organization says names are selected to be short, easy to pronounce, and familiar in the regions where they are used. Names can later be retired, particularly when a storm causes significant loss of life or destruction.

One name from the 2025 Atlantic season, Melissa, was retired after the Category 5 hurricane caused widespread devastation across parts of the Caribbean.
