 Former Kennedy Center employees allege leadership delayed roof repairs before citing safety issues in closure decision Former Kennedy Center employees allege that the venue’s leadership knew about serious structural problems well before citing newly discovered hazards as the reason for its abrupt closure this month. The claims were outlined in a letter to Congress from a lawyer representing anonymous whistleblowers. The letter accuses the center’s executive director and chief operating officer, Matt Floca, of failing to prioritize roof repairs and stopping a funded repair plan in April. Floca disputes the allegations, saying recent inspections revealed that water damage had spread farther into the building than officials previously knew. In a September court declaration, Floca cited “acute risks to public safety” following an inspection that found deterioration in a roof terrace canopy and a partial ceiling collapse.  NHRC RAISES CONCERN OVER INCITING STATEMENTS AHEAD OF ELECTIONS; URGES CITIZENS TO PROMOTE PEACE / DEMOCRACY


The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, has raised concern over cases of hate speech, inflammatory statements, threats of violence and voter intimidation ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in Osun state as well as the 2027 General Election.


At a press briefing in Abuja, Executive secretary of the Commission Tony Ojukwu stressed the need for urgent action by relevant authorities to address statements capable of heightening tension and undermining peaceful participation in the electoral process.


The NHRC specifically drew attention to divisive statements attributed to some Nigerians regarding the election in Osun State. 


The commission urged all stakeholders to exercise restraint and promote messages that support peace, tolerance and democratic participation.


The Commission is also calling on political actors, religious leaders, supporters and the media to avoid inflammatory rhetoric and respect the rights of all citizens as the country approaches the 2027 general election.
