 TEAM LAGOS EMERGES TOP AT 23RD NATIONAL SPORTS FESTIVAL SOUTH WEST ELIMINATION Lagos State athletes proved their dominance in the South West by edging out regional competitors and emerging top in the five team events contested at the elimination series qualifier for the 23rd National Sports Festival later this year in Enugu. The elimination series featured team events in volleyball, basketball, football, beach volleyball, and cricket in male and female categories. While the team clinched only the female football ticket by topping their group, they showed dominance in three other sports by winning both the male and female tickets. Team Lagos took first position in the volleyball male and female categories. The male team defeated their counterparts from Ondo in the finals by 25-18, 24-26, 25-20, and 25-20, while the female team defeated Team Oyo by 25-18, 22-25, 28-26, 16-25, and 15-8.  South African coalition party goes to court over law that angered Trump


South Africa's Democratic Alliance, the second-largest party in the ‌governing coalition, went to court on Monday to challenge a land seizure law that U.S. President Donald Trump cited when cutting off aid to the country last year.


The case has caused friction with the ​biggest party, the African National Congress, as the country gears up for municipal ​elections in November.


The Expropriation Act allows the state to seize land in ⁠the public interest, in some cases without compensating the owner, as part of efforts ​to redress the legacy of apartheid, Reuters reported.


It has been the subject of lengthy and often acrimonious ​debate for years, and was signed into law by President Cyril Ramaphosa in January 2025. No land has been seized to date.


The pro-business and mostly white-led DA says the legislation gives the government "vague and ​sweeping powers" and it will deter investment.


South Africa's government has ​rejected Trump's criticisms ⁠of its land reform policies and says the Expropriation Act is comparable to similar laws in many other countries.


The DA's case will ​be heard along with two other legal challenges launched by groups ​promoting the ⁠interests of Afrikaners, descendants of mostly Dutch settlers who Trump has offered refuge, alleging they face discrimination though South Africa vehemently rejects that claim.
