 ‘Tinubu Is Not the Problem’: Femi Kuti Blames Nigeria’s Weak Institutions for Systemic Crisis 

Afrobeat legend Femi Kuti has weighed in on the ongoing socio-political challenges plaguing Nigeria, asserting that President Bola Tinubu is not the country's primary issue. Instead, the veteran musician pointed to deep-seated institutional corruption as the fundamental barrier to the nation's progress.

Speaking during an episode of the Good News Naija podcast, Kuti argued that focusing solely on the presidency overlooks the systemic failures that allow controversial figures to ascend to power in the first place.

The Role of a Compromised Judiciary

According to Kuti, Nigeria's judicial system bears significant responsibility for the country's leadership deficits. He expressed that if the judiciary functioned with absolute integrity, President Tinubu would have been disqualified from contesting the 2023 presidential election due to the numerous controversies surrounding his past.

"Do you think Tinubu is the problem?" Kuti questioned during the podcast. "The judiciary that didn’t stop him from getting there in the first place is a problem. If all the allegations against him are true, how did he contest?"

He added that a robust regulatory and legal framework, managed by individuals of high moral caliber, would have naturally weeded out candidates with questionable backgrounds before they ever reached the ballot box.

A Systemic Crisis Affecting Nigerian Youth

Kuti further lamented that the corruption in Nigeria is not isolated to a single individual or administration. Rather, he described it as a widespread network of compromised elites who control virtually every critical sector of the nation.

This pervasive lack of accountability, the Afrobeat star warned, continues to have a devastating impact on the younger generation. He noted that the entrenched nature of Nigeria's political class is actively eroding the hopes of young citizens striving for a better and fairer society.
