United Bank for Africa Plc has formally welcomed Emmanuel Nnorom as its new Group Chairman, succeeding billionaire businessman Tony Elumelu, who has retired from the position after reaching the maximum tenure permitted for non-executive directors under Central Bank of Nigeria corporate governance guidelines.

Nnorom officially assumed office on August 21, 2026.

A seasoned business executive and chartered accountant, Nnorom brings more than four decades of professional experience to the role. He has also spent more than eight years in senior leadership positions within the UBA Group.

Before becoming chairman, Nnorom served in several key positions, including:

• Managing Director/CEO, UBA Africa

• Group Chief Operating Officer

• Group Chief Financial Officer

• Executive Director, Finance

• Executive Director, Risk

• Executive Director, Group Executive Office

He joined the UBA board as a Non-Executive Director in 2024 after his executive roles within the group.

Outside UBA, Nnorom previously served as President and CEO of Transnational Corporation Plc from 2014 to 2017 and has been Group CEO of Heirs Holdings since June 2017.

UBA said his experience and understanding of the institution would be important as the group continues its expansion across Africa and other international markets.

The leadership change marks the end of Elumelu's tenure as UBA Group Chairman after years of steering the bank as it strengthened its position as one of Africa's major pan-African financial institutions.
