Venezuela in talks with Siemens and General Electric to fix power crisis in key oil region

Venezuela’s interim government says it is in talks with Siemens and General Electric to address the country’s ongoing electricity crisis, focusing on urgent repairs in the heavily affected Zulia state, a key oil-producing region where chronic blackouts have disrupted daily life and industrial output.

Interim President Delcy Rodríguez said the discussions are part of a broader shift in international relations following recent diplomatic engagement with the United States, adding that the government is opening a “new chapter” in both domestic policy and foreign cooperation. She said the goal is to restore stability to the national power grid, which in some areas is operating far below capacity and remains vulnerable to frequent transmission failures.

Zulia, located in western Venezuela along the border with Colombia, has been among the hardest-hit regions, with repeated outages and strained infrastructure limiting economic activity tied to the country’s oil sector. Officials say the region sits at the edge of the national grid, making it particularly susceptible to disruptions.

Government and industry assessments indicate that technical teams linked to the two companies have already evaluated parts of Venezuela’s electrical system in recent months, including hydroelectric facilities in the south, as potential groundwork for rehabilitation proposals.

Rodríguez also tied the initiative to broader political messaging, calling for the removal of international sanctions and arguing they have worsened the country’s ability to maintain critical infrastructure. She said Venezuela is seeking greater international cooperation as part of efforts to stabilize energy supply and support economic recovery.
