Whitney Houston gets first-ever Barbie doll on what would have been her 63rd birthday, recreating iconic 1987 music-video look

Whitney Houston has been honored with her first Barbie doll, released by Mattel on what would have been the singer’s 63rd birthday.

The Barbie Signature Whitney Houston Doll was released on Aug. 9 as part of celebrations marking Houston’s career and lasting influence on music.

Created in collaboration with Pat Houston, Whitney’s sister-in-law and executor of the Estate of Whitney E. Houston, the doll recreates the singer’s look from her 1987 music video for “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).”

The doll features a purple tank dress, colorful drop earrings, vibrant eye makeup and a microphone stand inspired by the video.

Pat Houston told PEOPLE that discussions about creating a Whitney Houston Barbie began around 20 years ago.

“Whitney had never really endorsed anything, and we started having conversations about her brand ... we talked about a Mattel doll 20 years ago,” she said.

Houston, who d!ed in 2012 at 48, had originally been interested in a doll connected to her 1992 movie *The Bodyguard* and its accompanying soundtrack. That project did not happen, although Pat said the singer remained interested in creating a doll.

“I’m just really happy that we’re seeing this doll come to fruition, and it’s going to be a lasting influence across generations,” Pat said.

For the new release, Mattel and Pat chose to recreate Houston’s appearance from “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” one of the defining songs of her career.

Pat said the production team paid close attention to details including the earrings, hair color, dress, shoes and other elements of Houston’s appearance in the video.

The Barbie launch is part of a wider 2026 celebration of Houston’s legacy. The singer is also being recognized with honors including The Recording Academy Special Merit Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2026 New Jersey Hall of Fame Capstone Event.

Pat said working with Mattel on the project allowed her to help create an item intended to introduce Houston’s artistry to new generations.
