Anosike: PDP Has Changed, New Mindset Will Drive Our 2027 Agenda
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Abia State, Dr. Kelechi Anosike, has defended the party’s capacity to return to power in 2027, saying the PDP of today should be judged by its new direction rather than the shortcomings associated with previous administrations.
Anosike stated this on Thursday, September 3, 2026, while speaking at the monthly congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abia State Council.
Addressing concerns arising from comparisons between previous PDP administrations in Abia and the party’s current leadership and political structure, Anosike acknowledged the history of the party but insisted that the PDP he represents comes with a different mindset, focus and direction.
“Same party, new mindset, new focus, and new direction,” he said.
The PDP candidate also pointed out that some politicians who were part of the party in the past had since moved to other political parties, arguing that it would therefore be unfair to attribute every past action or policy of former PDP administrations to the present political structure.
Anosike further shifted the discussion to the broader economic realities faced by states across Nigeria before 2023, maintaining that the financial difficulties experienced by Abia were not unique to the state.
He said many state governments across the country struggled with revenue and funding, with some resorting to bank borrowing to meet their obligations, including the payment of workers' salaries.
“Before 2023, about 60 percent of the states used to go to bank to borrow money to be able to run their states and pay salaries,” he said.
According to him, there were also periods when states went for Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations and returned with little or nothing, making it difficult for them to meet their financial responsibilities.
The governorship candidate said the circumstances surrounding the country's finances at the time should therefore be considered when assessing the performance of previous administrations.
He, however, maintained that his campaign is focused on providing a new direction for Abia, rather than dwelling solely on the past.
Anosike said political parties should be assessed based on the quality of leadership, ideas and policies they present to the electorate, stressing that the PDP's proposed approach to governance would be guided by a new mindset and renewed focus.
