 Super Eagles: Stanley Nwabali Breaks Silence With Potent Social Media Message After National Team Recall


Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has broken his silence following his recall to the national team, posting a pointed message on social media just days after coach Eric Chelle named him in Nigeria's squad for the September 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.


Nwabali's inclusion marks his return to international football after an extended period away, an absence that followed a challenging phase both at club level and with the national team.


The 30-year-old Chippa United shot-stopper shared a video on Snapchat, replaying his memorable penalty saves against Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush during Nigeria's bronze medal victory over Egypt at AFCON 2025. This powerful visual statement is widely interpreted as Nwabali's way of asserting his readiness and reminding fans and selectors of his capabilities.


A Tumultuous Period Since AFCON Heroics


Nwabali was arguably Nigeria's standout performer at AFCON 2025, where his heroics in goal, especially in penalty shootouts, were instrumental. He famously saved spot-kicks from both Salah and Marmoush as the Super Eagles triumphed 4-2 on penalties against Egypt to secure the bronze medal, earning him Man of the Match recognition for his pivotal role.


However, his fortunes took a sharp turn after the tournament. According to reports, the goalkeeper departed Chippa United in February with expectations of a transfer to another club. This move, however, did not materialise, and the prolonged period without competitive football ultimately cost him his Super Eagles spot.


Fierce Competition for the Number One Shirt


During Nwabali's absence, the Super Eagles goalkeeping position saw new developments. Maduka Okoye stepped into the role, starting Nigeria's June friendlies against Poland and Portugal. The Udinese goalkeeper's performances ignited a genuine debate among fans and pundits about whether coach Chelle had found his new preferred first-choice custodian.
