LAWMA BOOSTS COMMUNITY RECYCLING, ENVIRONMENTAL CLEAN-UP EFFORTS
...Distributes 100 recycling bins at Osborne Foreshore, supports Ijora-Badia clean-up
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has strengthened community participation in responsible waste management through its Community Buy-Back Programme at Osborne Foreshore Phase 1 and support for a community clean-up exercise in Ijora-Badia.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said that the initiatives reflected the Authority’s commitment to promoting waste sorting, recycling and community ownership of environmental cleanliness.
He said, “Achieving a cleaner Lagos requires more than collecting waste; it requires changing how we generate, sort and dispose of waste. We are supporting communities with the awareness and practical tools they need to participate actively in responsible waste management and recycling.”
The LAWMA boss said that the Authority, under its Community Buy-Back Programme, was sensitising and distributing recycling bins to households in
Osborne Foreshore Phase 1 to promote waste sorting and recycling at source.
He explained that the bins, which are properly tagged for identification and accountability, were being distributed through the Estate Facility Manager.
" The LAWMA Academy is conducting sensitisation for residents on the appropriate use of the recycling bins, while the specific addresses and number of bins allocated to each sector are being captured and maintained as part of the project documentation.", he said.
In Ijora-Badia, LAWMA supported a community clean-up exercise organised by the Sustainable Urban Future Development Initiative (SUDFI) to mark the World Cleanup Day 2026 and promote environmental responsibility and healthier communities.
The exercise witnessed the active participation of members of the Joint Abete Community Development Association (CDA), who joined the clean-up efforts and demonstrated the importance of community ownership in sustaining environmental cleanliness.
The intervention covered Adetola/Afolabi Aladia Street, Lawan Close and Caliberian Oladehinde Avenue, where waste accumulation and blocked drains were promptly addressed.
The Joint Abete CDA executives appreciated LAWMA and SUDFI for the intervention, while urging residents to take greater responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean and ensuring proper waste disposal.
LAWMA reiterates its commitment to working with communities, estates and other stakeholders to promote responsible waste disposal, source separation and recycling, while encouraging residents to actively participate in initiatives that support a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Lagos.
