A California superintendent is fired after threatening "not to allow students to walk at graduation," because they didn't "clap loud" or "clap enough" for her daughter at an awards banquet.
Marian Phelps was the superintendent at Poway Unified School District. She was recently terminated from her position after members of her daughter's high-school softball team came forward about the misconduct they suffered from in relation to Mrs. Phelps.
The girls allege that Phelps threatened the entire senior softball team stating that l, "either they admit to orchestrating a conspiracy to not clap for her daughter at a sport's banquet or she would make sure none of them were allowed to walk at graduation."
Phelps has denied all allegations and said all the claims about her are false. However, according to school officials, first-hand knowledge from credible witnesses seemed to contradict Phelps's claims of innocence.
Phelps's daughter wrote a written statement saying the girls would cheer in an exaggerated way for everyone but her and that they were jealous of her and hated her.
Directly after the banquet, Phelps made unsolicited contact with the girl she believed to be the ring leader and used derogatory and disparaging language.
She then ramped up her attacks to include the entire senior softball team.
On April 30th, the Poway Unifide School District unanimously voted to terminate Phelps following an independent investigation.
It is not known if the girls had plans to not clap for the superintendent's daughter. I'm sure IF they did, it was hurtful. But there are better ways to go about this that do not include teacher misconduct.
