  Indian billionaire Gautam Adani charged in US for alleged bribery, fraud Gautam Adani, the chair of Indian conglomerate Adani Group and one of the world’s richest people, whose business empire extends from ports and airports to renewable energy,has been indicted in New York over an alleged multibillion-dollar fraud scheme, United States prosecutors have said. The authorities on Wednesday charged Adani and two other executives at Adani Green Energy, his nephew Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain, with agreeing between 2020 and 2024 to pay more than $250m in bribes to Indian government officials to obtain solar energy supply contracts expected to yield $2bn in profits. Prosecutors said the renewable energy company also raised more than $3bn in loans and bonds during this period based on false and misleading statements. Charity support: Zulum grants N80m to Guwori Islamic Academy Borno State Governor, Banagana Umara Zulum, has approved the release of N80m grant for use by Guwori Islamic Academy, a charity institution that provides education to children mostly from low income families. Zulum announced the approval on Sunday at the graduation ceremony of the school which is located around customs office in Jere Local Government Area. The governor explained that the N80 million will be released in four batches of 20 million every year to support provision of educational facilities, improve teachers' welfare and enhance learning for students. “I am highly impressed with what I have seen here today (Sunday). Don’t panic over troops movement, gunshots, Army calms Sokoto residents Army authorities in Sokoto State have asked residents not to panic at the sounds of gunshots or troops movement, as the 8 Division Nigerian Army, Sokoto, will commence inter-Brigade Range Classification Competition. They said the exercise was for Warrant officers and senior non-commission officers (SNCOs) at Tankwale village shooting range Sokoto, Tuesday, August 8. The exercise will involve the movement of troops and firing of live ammunition at the range situated along Illela Road, Sokoto State. According to a statement by Lieutenant Colonel Ikechukwu Eze, and made available to newsmen in Sokoto, the essence of the range classification exercise is to improve combat proficiency, firing skills and marksmanship of troops within the cadre of non-commission officers. SERAP Sues Tinubu Over Failure To Publish Spending Details Of N400bn Fuel Subsidy Savings Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over “the failure to publish spending details of about N400bn so far saved as a result of the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) popularly called petrol.” The suit followed reports that the Federal Government has saved N400bn within the four weeks following the implementation of the removal of subsidy on petrol policy.” In the suit number FHC/L/CS/1514/2023 filed last week at the Federal High Court in Lagos, SERAP is seeking: “an order of mandamus to direct and compel President Tinubu to publish details of spending of about N400 billion saved as a result of the removal of subsidy on petrol on 29 May, 2023.” SERAP is also seeking: “an order of mandamus to direct and compel President Tinubu to provide details of the plans on how the savings from the removal of subsidy on pet

NDDC disowns fake website, warns against fraudulent job tenders The Niger Delta Development Commission has warned against the activities of fraudsters forging its website to swindle unsuspecting members of the public. This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday, by the NDDC Director, Corporate Affairs, Dr Ibitoye Abosede, made available to newsmen, in Port Harcourt. The commission said the fraudsters were parading fake contract offers. The statement reads, “The attention of the Management of the Niger Delta Development Commission has been drawn to the activities of fraudsters dangling fake contracts and forging the official website of the Commission. “The latest scam circulating online is another communication between fraudsters and a US-based company purporting to indicate that a ‘Contract Award Committee’ within the Commission is processing tenders for jobs. “The letter has the name of the former Chairman of the Governing Board as the Chairman of this Committee. Niger: Customs CG puts officers at Benin, Cameroon borders on red alert The Acting Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adeniyi has put officers and men of the service manning the Benin Republic, Cameron and other borders on a red alert following the Nigeria-Niger border closure. Adeniyi said implementation of the Nigeria-Niger border closure “is 100 percent”. I HAVE SUBMITTED THE LIST COMMISSIONER NOMINEES TO THE ASSEMBLY - GOV. ALIA 6th August, 2023  The governor of Benue state, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has said he has submitted the list of commissioner nominees to the Benue State House of Assembly, and it is the prerogative of the leadership of the house to make the list public. The governor disclosed this on Saturday, August, 5th, 2023 while having a breakfast interface with the media in the state, at the Government House Makurdi.  Governor Alia, who was responding to a question on why he has not yet constituted the state's executive council, said he has since forwarded the list to the Assembly. He said, although the Assembly is on recess, the leadership of the house has communicated to him a date that they will cut short their recess, to come back and screen the commissioner nominees. He however, said he cannot usurp the powers of the Assembly to go public with the list, and the date for the commencement of the screening. Highlightin
