Abia CP, govt officials discover schools, tunnel used for kidnappings Abia State Commissioner of Police, CP Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, has lauded Governor Alex Otti for his support to security agencies in the fight against kidnapping and other forms of criminality witnessed in parts of the state. The Commissioner of Police said this at the weekend when he led a team of “Operation Crush” men and some Abia State government officials to two schools taken over by kidnappers in Lekwesi community, Umunneochi LGA. During the Umunneochi visit, a tunnel suspectedly used by kidnappers to ferry victims into the bush, was discovered. He said the schools visited have been dilapidated for a long time, adding that reconstruction of the schools would make it difficult for criminals to make use of them as dens. Rivers police return $3000 extorted by arrested officers Police in Rivers State said that three of its officers who kidnapped and extorted the sum of $3,000 from two men will face an orderly room trial and query, respectively. The Command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, who disclosed this while parading the suspects before newsmen in Port Harcourt on Monday, said the action is part of internal disciplinary measures taken against operatives involved in unlawful activities. Iringe-Koko, who is a superintendent of police, also said the money equivalent to N4.2 million have been recovered and handed over to the owners. Taking to his Instagram page, he shared a video of himself as he detailed exactly what happened and how he landed in the hospital. He expressed that he had been attacked by about 40 people and that they had injured him so badly and even broken his leg. He also revealed the reason for the attack, stating that it was all because of a contract that went wrong. He disclosed that he had initially been booked last year December for an event and by two black Americans and with the new year, things got more expensive. He revealed how he had expressed this particular expenses to them and had even gone ahead to do a video. However, they asked for a refund as they were not satisfied with what he pushed out to them.

Canada to reduce admission slots for Nigerian students, others.   The Canadian Government is set to impose a national cap to reduce the intake of international students into the country. According to the country’s immigration minister, Marc Miller, during an interview on Sunday with CTV’s Question Period, the Canadian government will need to have a meeting with provincial governments “to make sure that the provinces that have not been doing their jobs actually rein in those numbers on a pure volume basis.” “That volume is disconcerting,” Miller said, in reference to the number of international students in Canada. “It’s really a system that has gotten out of control.”

 Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old mother, Oluwabunmi Ajayi, for allegedly throwing her five-month-old baby, Imole Anifowose, into a river at Sagamu.  The woman allegedly dumped the baby in the river in what the police tagged premeditated drowning.  Spokesperson of the State Police Command, SP Omolola Odutola, who confirmed the incident said the mother was arrested following an attempted murder case which occurred on Sunday, January 21, 2024, when a humanitarian saw the suspect dropping her little child into the River “The person who saw her dropping the child into the river raced to the river and rescued the baby from drowning,” the PPRO said.  “The baby was rushed to OOUTH for immediate medical attention, and examination, and was reported to have survived the trauma,” Odutola said. Court nullifies Rivers budget, bars Fubara from ‘frustrating legislature’ A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Monday, nullified and set aside the presentation and passage of the Rivers State 2024 Budget by a four-member state assembly. Justice James Omotoso also ordered Governor Siminalayi Fubara to re-present the budget to the legally constituted House of Assembly led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule. Justice Omotoso also held that the Governor has no power to withhold funds belonging to the Rivers State House of Assembly. The judge restrained Governor Fubara from frustrating the sitting of the House of Assembly under Amaewhule or interfering in its affairs. The judge further declared null and void the Governor’s redeployment of the clerk and deputy clerk. The redeployment of the Clerk and the Deputy Clerk done by the Governor was declared null and void and was set aside. ‘Daddy, please don’t allow them to kill us’ — father of abducted girls narrates how his daughters pleaded     Mansur Al-Kadriyar, the father of six girls abducted in the Bwari area council of the federal capital territory (FCT), has recounted his ordeal while in captivity. Al-Kadriyar narrated his experience during an interview with Arise TV on Monday. The father of six girls was abducted alongside his daughters when bandits attacked his residence in Zuma 1, Bwari area of Abuja on January 2. During the attack, Abdulfatai Al-Kadriyar, Mansur’s younger brother, who led a team of police officers to the location of the attack was killed during a gun battle with the bandits. Two police officers who engaged the bandits in a shootout were also injured. The bandits later released the father of the girls to look for the ransom to release his daughters. In a statement by the Overseeing Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, the State Government has received reports from security agencies of an explosion in the Kidandan area of Giwa Local government.
