 EFCC Taskforce Arrests 34 Suspected Currency Speculators in Abuja Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, attached to the Taskforce on Currency mutilation, Dollarization of the Economy and Forex Malpractice, have arrested 34 suspected currency speculators  for alleged foreign exchange fraud.  Woman docked for allegedly defaming Akwa Ibom governor on Facebook 7 March 2023  A 37-year-old woman, Blessing Edet, was on Tuesday docked in a Federal High Court, Abuja for allegedly defaming Gov. Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom. Edet, who was arraigned before Justice Ahmed Mohammed by the Nigerian police on a six-count charge, however pleaded not guilty. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that while the Inspector-General of Police is the complainant in the charge number: FHC/ABJ/CR/181/2021, Edet is the sole defendant. St.John's College Alor :Fire engulfs Anambra's famous educational institution Michael Ezenwata Properties  worth over  one hundred million nalra were lost  on Monday morning when a fire broke out from one of the main blocks of  the World bank assisted hostel at St.John's Science and Technical College Alor. According to a report at the scene of the incident,the fire outbreak occurred after some attempts to start the school's generator failed. The Principal/Manager of the College Reverend father Dr.Francis Unegbu who spoke to the press on the incident, said the fire started between 9 and 9.30 am on Monday morning when the students were having their breakfast. According to the principal, there was no human casualty but properties worth between 80 million naira and 100 million naira were lost in the inferno. Two Americans who were kidnapped in Mexico last week were found dead on 8th March. The other two were found alive and are now in the care of US authorities. The kidnapping occurred in Matamoros, a border town in the state of Tamaulipas, while the four victims were on their way to a tummy tuck surgery for one of the group. The group had driven from Brownsville, Texas, and were in a white minivan with North Carolina license plates when gunmen began shooting at their car. The gunmen then took the Americans in another vehicle and drove them away. Mexican authorities are considering various theories about motives for the attack, including the possibility that the Americans were mistaken for smugglers of Haitian migrants. Illegal migrant crossings at the U.S. southern border have soared in recent months, spurring tension among criminal groups who control human trafficking through northern Mexico. The Lagos State Government has begun the release of impounded vehicles to their owners free of charge. The state government said it decided to wave the fine attached to such seizures due to the cash crunch that has hit the nation following the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) Naira redesign policy. Lagos Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, who confirmed this on Tuesday, March 7, said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had extended the palliative measures by ensuring that vehicles impounded for minor traffic offences were returned to their owners with the fines waved. He said;  “When you look at what the governor proposed, especially during the cash crunch period, we have reduced public transport fare by 50%. So when you go on our BRTs and all the Lagos state funded public transport, including Lag Ride, we have reduced the fare by 50% just to alleviate the suffering of our people. “Apart from that, moving away from transport, we have opened up food banks in certain areas. Finally, CBN Speaks On Old Naira Notes   MAR 7, 2023  Central Bank of Nigeria, Isa Abdulmumin, Nigerians, Old Naira Notes, Supreme Court Following the new directive of Supreme Court, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) spokesman, Isa Abdulmumin, has said that both the old and new naira notes are now legal tender. Speaking on Tuesday, Abdulmumin said even though the CBN is yet to issue an official statement on the matter, Nigerians can now spend and collect both the old and new notes. He added that the apex bank just wants to make life easy for Nigerians and has directed commercial banks to obey the supreme court ruling which extended the validity period of the old notes to the end of the year. The CBN spokesman said, “Banks are paying old notes as well as new notes. They are all legal tender. “Yes, the CBN has not issued an official statement on the issue. Court Sends 14 Internet Fraudsters to Prison in Benin City Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on Tuesday March 7, 2023 secured the conviction of fourteen internet fraudsters before Justice Efe Ikponmwonba of Edo State High Court Benin City. They were arraigned by the Benin Zonal Command of the EFCC on a separate one count charge of fraudulent personation. The convicts are Gift Patrick, Lucky Paul Omofureta, Elvis John Mathew, Jeremiah Rebirth Umoru, Alex Aimuawosa Yuodegha and Daniel Mathew. Others are; Edefe Isaiah, Ese Isaiah, Osas Igho Amos, Destiny Aghayere, Christian Oghenekewe, God's power Osabuohien, Wisdom Christopher and Favour Osaghale.
