2023 Election: Ex-UK Ambassador Makes U-Turn, Expresses Disappointment With INEC  April 29, 20230 Contrary to her earlier position, the former British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ms. Catriona Laing, has expressed disappointment with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the recently concluded 2023 general elections. Ms. Laing made the assertion in a short video clip that’s currently trending on social media. The video is a deviation from her previous statement in which she gave the conduct of the election passmark and told Nigerians to be proud of the outcome. In the latest video clip, Laing retracted her opinion and expresses disappointment with INEC and reiterated her government’s threat to slam visa ban and/or other punitive measures on electoral offenders. After the backlash public outcry, she seemed to have walked back her condescending and hasty endorsement of the election which has been adjudged by both local and international observers as poorly executed.

Gunman storms US home, kills five, including child 29 April 2023  Police in Texas say they believe a man killed five of his neighbours after an argument about him shooting a semi-automatic weapon in his front yard. The victims were all from Honduras, and included an eight-year-old child. The incident occurred late on Friday night in the small town of Cleveland, San Jacinto County, Texas. Among those killed were two women found lying on top of two surviving children, according to local Sheriff Greg Capers. The suspect, believed to be Mexican, has been named as Francisco Oropez. He is still on the run and thought to be armed. Investigators believe that the victims had asked Oropez, who it is thought had been drinking, to stop shooting as they were trying to put a baby to sleep. After both parties returned to their houses, the gunman “topped off his magazine, and walked down his driveway… into the people’s house and started shooting,” said Sheriff Capers. JAMB to sanction 20 CBT centers 29 April 2023 The Registrar of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Is-shaq Oloyede has given reason why the Board is yet to release conducted results from the ongoing 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Oloyede also disclosed that 20 Computer Based-Test (CBT) centers found wanting nationwide would be sanctioned for failure to comply with the guidelines governing the conduct of the UTME. The JAMB registrar stated this in Lagos while monitoring the ongoing 2023 UTME in some centers and described the conduct as smooth despite the initial hitches experienced. According to JAMB, 1,595,779 candidates registered for the 2023 UTME and Lagos recorded the highest number of applicants of 270, 573. The exam is been written in 708 centers nationwide. Couple plans self-kidnap, demands N5m ransom 29 April 2023  The Police Command in Lagos State says it has arrested a couple (name withheld) over alleged self-kidnap for N5 million ransom. The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday. Hundeyin said that the husband, a 53-year-old technician and wife, 48-year-old masseuse and bone setter, were arrested on Wednesday and Thursday respectively after a family member of the man reported the purported kidnap.   Alleged Illness, Invites Him Again Over Corruption Allegation April 29, 2023      The former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, has been invited by the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for interrogation over an investigation concerning corruption allegations against him. The EFCC had earlier invited Akpabio to appear for questioning on March 29 but his lawyer, Umeh Kalu (SAN) in a letter to the anti-graft agency alleged that his client was suffering from pneumonia and cardiac arrhythmia. It’s been alleged that at the time Akpabio headed the ministry, a N40 billion fraud was perpetrated in the Niger Delta Development Commission. It was also reported that there were allegations of over N86 billion contract scams involving the senator-elect and a former Acting Managing Director of the NDDC, Prof Kemebradikumo Pondei, which the EFCC had been investigating. CITAD Supports 27 Women With N2.4m Grant In its effort's to promote digital innovation among women, the center for information technology and development (CITAD) ,has provided post-training support worth N2,475,000 to 27 beneficiaries, of the Digital Creativity and Innovation for Young Women, (DICI-YOW). Speaking during the presentation of cheques , the executive director of the center, Alhaji  Yunusa Zakari Ya’u, explained that, the training was aimed at empowering young girls with digital skills, entrepreneurship knowledge, and gadget operation. Nigeria Hits Over $1bn In Non-oil Export The Executive Director of the Nigeria Export promotion Council, Dr. Ezra Yakusak says Nigeria recorded 1.345 billion dollars in non-oil products export in the first quarter of this year. He made this know while briefing newsmen on progress made in non-oil export in the first quarter of the year. Dr. Yakusak said the amount represent an increase of 8.50 per cent over the first quarter of 2022 which was US$1.249 billion. While giving the breakdown of the non-oil export performance for the first quarter, Dr Yakusak explained that a total number of 167 products were exported in the 1st quarter of 2023. Dr. Yakusak noted the products according to him ranged from manufactured, semi-processed, solid minerals and raw agricultural commodities. “Of the top-ten products exported in the first quarter of 2023, Urea, Cocoa Beans, Sesame Seed, Soya Beans/meal and Cashew nuts/kernels were top five. Court Jails Six Internet Fraudsters in Calabar Justices Ijeoma Ojukwu and Rosemary Oghoghorie of the Federal High Court sitting in Calabar, Cross Rivers State, have convicted and sentenced six Internet fraudsters to various terms of imprisonment.  The convicts:  Ojiako David Enyinna, Heziekiah Ezekiel Eno, Onyedika Ugochukwu Enemchukwu, Adinkwu Destiny Chukwudifu, God’s  Favour Bassey Essi and Ebenezer Emmanuel Peter,  were jailed on Wednesday, April 26, 2023. They were convicted after pleading guilty to different charges bordering on obtaining by false pretence and criminal impersonation.   While Enemchukwu and Peter were arraigned on separate two-count charges,  Enyinna, Eno, Chukwudifu and Essi were arraigned on separate one-count charge bordering on obtaining by false pretence and criminal impersonation. EFCC Arrests 19 Akwa Ibom Varsity Students for Alleged Internet Fraud Nineteen Undergraduates of Akwa Ibom State University, Mkpat-Enin, were on Friday, April 28, 2023, arrested by operatives of the Uyo Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for suspected internet- related offences. They were arrested at their private hostels: Obong Abasi Lodge and Mfon Obong Lodge both located at Ikot Akpadem in Mkpat-Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.  Their arrest followed several months of surveillance on their suspected involvement in romance scam, fraudulent crypto currency transactions and impersonation. Items recovered from them include, several laptops and mobile phones. They will be charged to court as soon as Investigations are concluded.

Woman arrested for allegedly poisoning 12 friends 27 April 2023 Thai police say they have apprehended a woman suspected of poisoning 12 of her friends and acquaintances with cyanide. Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn was arrested in Bangkok following recent inquiries into a friend’s death. The victim’s family had raised suspicions after she died on a trip with Sararat earlier this month. Police allege she killed for financial reasons to which Sararat has denied all the charges. Thai authorities have denied her bail. Two weeks ago, she had travelled with her friend to Ratchaburi province, west of Bangkok, where they had taken part in a Buddhist protection ritual at a river, police said. Shortly after, her friend Siriporn Khanwong collapsed and died on the riverbank. Traces of cyanide were found in her body during the autopsy, police said. Court Orders Sperm Donor Who Fathered 550 Children To Stop April 29, 2023      Dutch judges have ordered a man suspected of fathering more than 550 children through sperm donations to stop donating, in the latest fertility scandal to shock the Netherlands. The man, identified in Dutch media only as Jonathan M, 41, was taken to court by a foundation protecting the rights of donor children and by the mother of one of the children allegedly fathered from his sperm. Dutch clinical guidelines say a donor should not father more than 25 children in 12 families, but judges said the man had helped produce between 550 and 600 children since he started donating sperm in 2007. The court therefore “prohibits the defendant from donating his semen to new prospective parents after the issuing of this judgment”, judge Thera Hesselink said on Friday. 2023 Population Census Postponed Again April 29, 2023 For the second time, the Federal Government of Nigeria has postponed the 2023 Population and Housing Census scheduled to commence in May. Dez Mayorz Media gathered that the decision was made yesterday after a meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and the Chairman of National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Isa Kwarra.
